Where Does Health Come From
Dr. Darrel Crain

Is it "natural" to be healthy? Is it luck that decides if we "catch" whatever is going around? Does random chance decide which one of us will be stricken with heart disease or cancer? Are we helpless victims of the constant attack from bacteria, viruses and disease?

These questions may seem philosophical, abstract or fanciful, but our answers to these questions actually frame how we approach health care for our physical beings.

For example, if you believe that disease causes a lack of health, your approach to health care will be to try to fight off and kill the agents of disease. This is the traditional medical, or mechanistic view of health.

On the other hand, if you believe that a lack of health is what leads to disease, your approach to health care will be to do those things that best promote health. This is the vitalistic view of health, a view embraced by the principles of chiropractic.

Good Health is Normal
What do we call the normal state of a body, functioning without disturbance to the natural, inborn ability to heal and maintain life? Health.

"If we live our lives within the laws and balance of nature, we will remain healthy," explains Deepak Chopra, M.D. In this view, we have nothing to fear from "dangerous microorganism invaders" unless our natural health is in some way already compromised.

Unfortunately, life in our modern world provides built-in stresses that constantly challenge our health.

Three components of life and stress can be considered separately, although they are wholly interrelated. The three factors are the physical, the emotional and the chemical, and together they may be called the triune of health.

No single one of these three elements can be affected without causing alterations in the other two. As an example, we know how profoundly our emotions can alter our body chemistry and the physical state of our bodies.
