Fever is a good thing

I recently saw an ad for a drug that was being tauted as "the fever medication," as if fever is a bad thing. That got me thinking, this is the public's perception, isn't it?! Well, it is a misperception.

Fever is not caused by disease. Rather, it is the healthy response of one's body to disease. It is one's own Innate wisdom raising the internal thermometer to the level it needs to optimize one's healing.

So, why would anyone want to mess with that? Surely we don't have more faith in medicine's limited understanding of health than in Innate's (nature's). Why, the best doctors and scientists in the world, left on their own could not run your body for even 10 minutes. Innate definitely knows what it is doing. And, as far as safety goes, medical experts agree that a sustained fever of up to 105.7° in kids and 103.5° in adults is considered safe. Prior to that, there is no reason to lower it by artificial means. Some relatively innocuous conditions like certain influenzas can typically cause your body to create some very high fevers. While viral meningitis (which incidentally is totally unaffected by antibiotics) a potentially deadly condition is typically met by very low fevers. One's actual temperature really does mean very little.

In Chiropractic we don't 'treat' a fever, we wouldn't presume to know what your temperature should be at any given time. We do recommend getting an extra adjustment when you have a fever though. The fever shows that your body is 'fighting something,' and therefore will benefit even more than normal from the adjustment's reduction of nerve interference.

Will the fever go down because of the adjustment? We won't know. It may, but it may also go up. The goal of the adjustment will simply be to remove any interference to the body so the body may be at its optimum temperature at that time, for those circumstances. No one but Innate can say what that temperature should be.

So, save your money on "the fever medication," get in an extra adjustment or two and know that the greatest healer of all, your Innate, is on the job.
