Whew...that was a quick summer! It's back to school month and with that, we usually have quite a few patients that come in with mid back pain from carrying too much weight in book bags. The best way to carry a heavy bag is to consider the following tips:
1) Only carry 10-15% of body weight. So if someone is 120 pounds, shoot for a bag weighing just 18 pounds at most. Anything heavier effects posture and can cause longer term spinal problems.
2) Put heaviest items in the bottom of the bag. Take breaks if possible. If heavy loads are unavoidable, call us about how to help with strengthening core & back muscles with our Strong Posture Program!
3. Always use a back pack that has two straps to evenly distribute the weight. Evenly distribute everything in the bag when packing it also helps decrease pain.
4) Keep your bag close to your body to reduce the amount of sway and stress placed on the spinal muscles.
