Nervous System Integrity

All day long we think. One fleeting thought after another. And there is never more than one thought occurring at any one time. Our conscious mind is thoroughly aware of what we make it aware of as we navigate through our day. With precision, it keeps us informed of what we need to know in our waking mind.

All day long our hearts beat, we breathe in and out, carry on duties like typing, walking, or talking and living. Some of this may surface to the conscious level, but most of the time we are operating these tasks at the subconscious level or a level somewhere in between conscious and subconscious. We need not be bothered by the details if everything is ok. We are on "automatic pilot".

Regardless of the level of awareness, the one system in our body that rules over our domain is the nervous system. It decides, either consciously or not, whether things are ok or in need of a change. Without a properly functioning nervous system there would be little hope for proper interaction with our internal and external environments. In short, it would be difficult if not impossible to live.

In almost all situations the nervous system operates by what is known as a feedback loop. A part of the brain is connected to every single organ, muscle, gland, etc. in the body either directly by a nerve or indirectly by chemical communicators. This organ, muscle, gland or other body part is then connected back to the brain. This relationship lets the brain control the body part while the body part sends messages back to the brain to let it know what is going on. An extremely delicate and important system is created to deal with all situations inside and outside of the body.

When described in simple terms, the nervous system forms a loop between one part of the brain and that part of the body it is associated with. As you can probably guess, it is not quite this simplistic but it offers an idea as to the nervous system's role and its overall control. In one direction, the brain tells the organ, muscle, gland, etc. what needs to be done. In return, the organ, muscle, gland, etc. tells the brain what is going on. This reciprocation of information is mandatory in coordinating the millions of functions that occur in the body every second of our lives.

Sometimes this connection occurs directly through the nervous system causing immediate but short-term effects. Other times there is an indirect connection using chemicals to send signals to areas that the nerves do not immediately connect to for a delayed but long-term effect. Regardless, the nervous system controls every single function in the body. With this important job imagine what happens when something disturbs the delicate balance in this information system.

When information is delayed, obscured, increased or decreased either coming or going in the nervous system the ultimate function of all the interconnected parts is disturbed. This dysfunction can cause, for example, 60% of optimum function in the thigh muscles or 120% of optimum function in the liver. Either way, the body part is stressed and symptoms or illness can result. And at the same time, if normal amounts of information are restored to the body part it can return to "normal" functional levels.

Doctors of Chiropractic have accepted this relationship as a focal point to diagnosing health problems in the body, sometimes before they even occur. They are the only health care professionals with this specific approach and are experts in determining the level of function of the nervous system. As a matter of good health, it makes good sense to have a chiropractic check-up at any age to make sure this aspect of your health is all that it can be. Learn what you can today about this valuable health care approach so that you can benefit from its wealth of knowledge tomorrow.
